The first week of December, Cole had to be in Frankfurt for work. Given that it’s the holiday season where Christmas markets are abundant across Europe and gluhwein flows freely, I couldn’t help but join him for the weekend to check it out.

We had less than 24 hours to explore as we wanted to be back in Amsterdam for a friend’s Christmas party Saturday night, but I took a half day off work so we could make the most of our short time in the city.

We grabbed a delicious lunch at Kleine Anna and had some phenomenal sandwiches with all different homemade spreads.  We then thoroughly enjoyed the Christmas markets before making our way over to enjoy some great craft beers at a bar called Naiv. We followed the bartender’s recommendation for the best schnitzel in town. We headed across the river to Zum Eichkatzerl, where we enjoyed enough schnitzel and spatzle for a small army 🙂

On Saturday, we grabbed breakfast at Cafe Karin before venturing back to the Christmas markets to see if there were any souvenirs we wanted to buy. We window shopped in the town’s main shopping area before grabbing some beers at this great rooftop bar, Leonhards, which sits on top of a department store in the town center. It was a gorgeous day so we enjoyed the views and basked in the sun for a bit. We then walked a bit more around the town before having to head back to the hotel to check out and head to the airport.

Christmas markets in the daytime

Despite our short trip, Cole and I both really loved Frankfurt. We were surprised at how much we liked it as it had never been at the top of our must-visit list. We had a great time and look forward to hopefully getting another chance to visit in the future!
