Oktoberst in Germany has been on our bucket list forever! We were so excited to finally be able to experience Munich in all of its glory with some of our good friends from Amsterdam.
We landed Friday afternoon and explored the city a bit – checking out Marienplatz and some of the other sites downtown. That evening, I met up with my wonderful former manager/mentor from Siemens, Susan, who now lives in Munich and I hadn’t seen in years. We had a delicious dinner before she joined for some beers with some of the group at one of the beer halls in downtown Munich. We even ran into some of Cole’s Booth MBA friends at one of the restaurants – such a small world 🙂
Saturday morning, we woke up bright and early and headed to the Augustiner tent in Thereisienwiese, the main grounds of Oktoberfest. We arrived just after 10 and fortunately, part of the group camped out early that morning to hold down a big table for our whole group. All 20 of us ended up being able to seat together which was amazing. We anxiously awaited for the first keg to be tapped (which happens at 12 on the dot on the first day of Oktoberfest). Shortly after 12, the beer was flowing and our lovely beer maiden kept the steins coming.
After a few hours in the tent, Cole, Bryan Hilary and I decided to venture off to enjoy some of the rides in the park. We rode the roller coaster and some crazy spinning upside down ones, before realising it was a terrible idea to spin around in a ride when you’re sufficiently drunk. Cole had to tap out for a bit but re-joined us a little bit later. We checked out some of the other beer tents and some more rides. We stopped in one final tent, which had an amazing band and everyone was dancing on the tables before the hunger got to us. We ended the evening enjoying delicious pizza with Hilary and Bryan before calling it a night.
Unfortunately our flight was early Sunday morning so we didn’t get to partake in day 2 of the festivities.
Oktoberfest was so much fun and everything we hoped it would be! We had such a great time seeing our friends from Amsterdam and drinking liter steins all weekend!
